This was the 22nd year of the holding of Harpenden’s ‘Classics on the Common’ event.
It was the first time that I had attended. The event had come to my attention as I was developing this website and adding ‘Event’ to its menu. Harpenden is about sixty miles from where I live so well within striking distance, so off my wife and I went on Wednesday 27th July.
The weather could not have been better and many hundreds of people turned up, travelling at a snails pace through Harpenden village centre towards the marvellous ‘Common’. I was struck by the friendliness of the stewards and the general good humour of all the exhibitors and visitors. But above all I was stuck by the wide variety of cars on display, from modern Ferraris to Model T Fords and early Austin Sevens. What an absolute delight for any car enthusiast such as myself.
Although the show is free, both for car owners who want to exhibit their cars and for visitors, funds are raised for local charities. From 2016, Classics on the Common was organised by Rotary in Harpenden which is the new charity arm of Harpenden Village Rotary Club and they were very grateful to have their numbers boosted by members of its associated club, Harpenden Village Inner Wheel, and St Albans & Harpenden Police Cadets. Other helpers included members of Harpenden Lions Club and Carpenters Arms Classic Car Club and volunteers from the principal charities supported by the show. In addition their was very significant support from friends and family of the above organisations.
